FIVE FOR FREEDOM comes to Fauquier County, Virginia

July 11, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Much of my research for FIVE FOR FREEDOM: The African American Soldiers  in  John Brown’s Army took place in Fauquier County, now known for its horse farms and vineyards but once part of the  plantation South dependent on slave labor.  Dangerfield Newby, one of the five, was from here.  Osborne Perry Anderson’s uncle was born here.  My “One Bright Hope” chapter shines a light on this county in the Commonwealth of Virginia just an hour from the nation’s capital.  The Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County was a great resource and its volunteer staff eagerly welcomed me into its archives.  I am pleased to have the opportunity to share my story — their story — at their headquarters and museum, located off the main street in The Plains on the afternoon of Aug. 11, 2018.
