FREE

I am honored to be speaking in Detroit on the second evening of a two-night conference in mid-October focused on the 160th anniversary of the John Brown raid on Harpers Ferry Oct. 16, 1859.  I will be speaking at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History about the five African Americans with Brown that are featured in my book FIVE FOR FREEDOM: The African Americans in John Brown’s Army. I will be in conversation for this event with Professor Herb Boyd, journalist, author, educator and activist. He has authored or edited 23 books, including The Dairy of Malcolm X, with Ilyasah Al-Shabazz, Malcolm X’s daughter. His articles have been published in the Black ScholarFinal Call, the Amsterdam NewsCineasteDownbeat, the Network Journal, and the Daily Beast. A scholar for more than forty years, he teaches African American history and culture at the City College of New York in Harlem, where he lives.
