Politics & Prose

June 2, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

FREE

One day after its official publication, I discussed my new book FIVE FOR FREEDOM: The African American Soldiers in John Brown’s Army, at Washington, D.C.’s iconic independent book store.  FIVE FOR FREEDOM is an overlooked story from the past that speaks to the present. These five men — Osborne Perry Anderson, Dangerfield Newby, Lewis Sheridan Leary, Shields Green and John Anthony Copeland — have been treated as footnotes, if at all, to their martyred leader.  But, now, after 160 years, they take center stage for the first time in this work that talks about the world into which they were born and raised, how they came together at this fateful time and place, Harpers Ferry in October 1859, their fates, the aftermath and their legacies down through the generations.

I spoke to an SRO crowd estimated at 110.  Some good questions and good discussion followed my presentation. To see a video of my talk from Politics and Prose’s You Tube channel, click here.
