John Brown and The Raiders. Oct. 7, 2023 + 3 years, + 5 days

An Historic Anniversary

This month marks 167 years since abolitionist John Brown led 18 men to the federal arsenal town of Harpers Ferry. His goal: to seize the town, its arsenal and gun factory and to incite a slave insurrection. The raid lasted a mere 36 hours before U.S. marines, under the command of Col. Robert E. Lee, ended it. None of the men who marched with Brown to Harpers Ferry survived, save one, Osborne Perry Anderson, who wrote the only insider account of the raid. The others either died at the Ferry or were captured, indicted, convicted and executed. Among the raiders were five African Americans, whose stories I told in my 2018 book “Five for Freedom: the African American Soldiers in John Brown’s Army.” They were literally treated as footnotes if at all in the John Brown story, and it has been my privilege to restore these men to their rightful place in American history and the continuing struggle to make our country live up to its founding ideals, and where out of many we are one. I invite you to join us in this forthcoming virtual roundtable to keep history—and hope—alive. Register at: www.johnbrown250.org .
