Eugene L. Meyer, award-winning journalist, will discuss stories and lessons learned from his decades at the Washington Post, and before, as well as his most recent book “FIVE for FREEDOM: The African Americans in John Brown’s Army” and its current resonance. Meyer will draw parallels between the past (the 1850s) and the present — a country deeply divided — and challenge the audience to act to save our democracy. In 2019, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Independent Review of Books (www.wirobooks.com) for which he writes occasional reviews and essays. For more about him, see www.eugenelmeyer.com and twitter.com/genemeyer

“Gene Meyer is one of the finest journalists to come out of the Ben Bradlee era at The Washington Post. He has the highest standards and practices aggressive but compassionate storytelling.” – Bob Woodward
Since leaving the Post in January 2004, Meyer has received 15 awards and citations for his journalism. He received the top gold award from the International Regional Magazine Association for his “Hidden Maryland” columns in Maryland Life magazine. He has also written for the New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, and other publications.
His first book, “Maryland Lost and Found,” published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in 1986, was favorably reviewed by acclaimed novelist Anne Tyler in Washington Post Book World. His “Chesapeake Country,” a handsome coffee table book, was first published in 1990.
