FIVE FOR FREEDOM Comes to Upshur Street Books, in Petworth, DC
Upshur Street Books is an indie bookstore in the Petworth neighborhood of northwest DC. Historically, Petworth was a rowhouse neighborhood of mostly white working class families. With integration in the 1950s, white flight took hold and the the racial composition shifted dramatically, as working- and middle-class African Americans moved in. These days, Petworth is luring millennials into a newly diverse multi-racial, multi-cultural milieu. Upshur Street was always at the commercial epicenter, and Upshur Street books, just east of Georgia Avenue, fits right in. The indie store has been open for just a few short years but has established itself as a neighborhood fixture and even made national headlines when President Obama paid a visit. I am delighted to be presenting the story of FIVE FOR FREEDOM: The African American Soldiers in John Brown’s Army at this upstart Upshur Street Books.
